No wedding would be the same without flowers! They are the best way to tie your theme and color palette together. Whether you are coordinating your flowers with the season or your personality, one of Nashville’s best flowers shops is here to make your ideal wedding a reality. We are always excited to work one of our favorite vendors, the The Flwr Shop, and this week we got the chance to talk to the owner, Alex, about her business.
What was your dream job growing up?
The earliest I can remember is veterinarian. Then I realized how long I would be in school and I wasn’t the school type at age 9. Then I became fascinated with the wider world and thought I’d become an anthropologist or a National Geographic photographer. Then I moved away from Miami and discovered flowers and fell in love. I always wanted to be an artist but I had a false idea in my mind that skill should be innate and if I couldn’t draw a perfect image then I couldn’t possibly be an artist. Flowers taught me that I could and was already an artist but that it just takes daily practice to get to a place where you can express yourself accurately through your art.
What does a typical wedding day look like for you/the whole team?
Bagels and coffee in the morning. Loud hiphop to get the blood flowing. Set up days are usually fairly relaxed and exciting. It’s the final hour, when we get to see all the thought and work put together and we get to see the bride’s face when she sees her bouquet for the first time. Sometimes she cries and that’s always the best feeling for us! We know we’ve aced it when she cries with joy!
How did you get into the business?
I fell into it when I moved up to Boston from Miami. I had never seen a peony before and I just couldn’t believe the delicate beauty of all these cooler weather flowers I was not accustomed to, having grown up in such a tropical place with no seasons.
How long have you been in business?
11 years now! I swear I’m not that old! This is just the only thing I’ve ever really done!
What is your favorite part of a wedding day/event day?
When the bride cries. See above.
What is your favorite type of arrangement to create?
I LOVE the fall palette. Not the traditional harsh oranges and yellows. I love the subtle, muted gold tones and ever so slightly blush with deep burgundy and purple hues. The range of colors in fall is just awe inspiring.
What would be your dream event to design for be?
A relatively small event with an unlimited budget to create an epic botanical dream land a la Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Who celebrity would you most like to be hired by to create flower arrangements?
Yeesh. I’m so out of touch with celebrity culture. I have no clue. Someone who is elegant, composed, not over the top, appreciative of nature and excellent design. Someone not interested in lots and lots of crystals.
If you could go anywhere tomorrow, where would you go?
Back to New York City. I miss the hustle and bustle and the inspiration I get from being around literally millions of people going about their business and doing inspiring things all around me.
