The beginning of one of the biggest days of your life has to start with perfect hair and makeup… and we know just the lady! Madison Dennis, owner of MHD Beauty, has been a freelance makeup artist for the past 3.5 years. Madison has experience in all aspects of the Beauty world such as fashion, pageantry, and weddings while also creating her own like of MHD cosmetics. To learn a little more about Madison and her business we asked her a few questions:
What was your dream job growing up?
When I was growing up I always joked that I would like to be either a meteorologist, work in the music business, or be a cosmetologist.
What does a typical wedding day look like for you?
On a typical Saturday during peak wedding season, our wedding hair & makeup team has anywhere from 3-5 wedding parties & brides to style for. I will usually get up and check traffic reports while drinking my coffee, letting the team know of any potential travel delays or accidents they should be aware of, and just generally being available for check ins and emergency phone calls from them. Then, I will get ready and head out to take care of my bride for the day.
How did you get into the beauty business?
Growing up, I was always the friend that did others’ hair & makeup for prom, pageants, weddings, etc. Also, as a singer and performer (theatre, etc), I’ve always done my own hair & makeup for the stage. After competing in the Miss Tennessee pageant in 2013, I was presented with an opportunity to travel across the country with a pageant hair & makeup team to do hair & makeup for a large national pageant. After that experience, I was hooked, and began taking my craft seriously and building my clientele.
How long have you been in business? Why did you decide to start a business?
My business, MHD Beauty, LLC, has been in existence since 2014, but I have been styling hair & makeup on other people since 2006. I graduated with a Music Business degree in 2011 from Belmont University and began working in the music industry. While I loved the entertainment business and where I worked, I really felt called to own a business. My husband, also an entrepreneur, and I were married in 2014, and he inspired me to begin my beauty business. I was able to quit my music industry gig and focus on my beauty business full time in January 2015.
What is your favorite part of a wedding day/event day?
My favorite part is when everyone is styled and the girls are getting ready to change out of their robes into their gowns. It is such a fun time, because everyone looks so beautiful and is ready to get the day’s events rolling.
What is your favorite wedding day hairstyle?
To be honest, I do not favor one particular hairstyle over the other. My favorite bridal hairstyle is one that makes the bride feel like the best, most stylish version of herself, and one that she is comfortable wearing throughout the day. For some, that is a textured, curly updo, for others, it is something more chic and sleek. I’ve had brides wear their hair completely down, ones that wear their hair in the highest princess updo, and everything in between. I genuinely enjoy creating them all.
Who would be your dream celebrity to style and get ready for their wedding day?
I mean, if Dolly Parton got married again, I would sign up for that job immediately. Dolly is a one-of-a-kind individual. I absolutely adore everything she says and does, and it would be an honor just to be in her presence. But, Dolly loves some glamour, and so do I, so I think it’d be a great fit.
If you could go anywhere tomorrow, where would you go?
If I could pick up and go somewhere tomorrow it would definitely be to an all-inclusive resort in the Bahamas. I’m a big fan of the beach – to me, it is the ultimate relaxation spot. My husband & I had the opportunity to go to an all-inclusive resort for our honeymoon and it was just the most exquisite experience. Not having to worry about paying for things, or driving anywhere, and having the staff take care of everything for you was just a dream.
Our team here at Vision In White was thankful to get to see the true work of MHD beauty at our weddings but we are more excited to learn so much about Madison and her business! We look forward to seeing your beauty talents and business truly thrive!
