Planning Your Dream Wedding – A 10 Month Guide to saying “I do”

Congratulations! If you’re reading this, then chances are you might be thinking about starting to plan the wedding of your dreams. This should be one of the most exciting and amazing moments of you and your partner’s lives, yet many couples can feel overwhelmed when they begin to look seriously at the wedding planning process. Have no fear though, that’s where we come in! Getting a wedding planner for your big day not only takes the stress off of you and your future spouse, but also ensures that someone is always looking out for your best interests along the way. Keep reading for a glimpse at what our 10-month guide to planning your wedding day looks like.


10 Months Prior to Wedding Day

Beginning the planning process can be one of the most fun moments of the entire process! After you have hired a rock star wedding planner, it is time to start having those initial conversations about your wedding day. This month is really where you want to nail down some of those bigger details that will determine the overall feel of your wedding. For instance, how many guests will you invite? What day do you want to get married? What theme or colors do you want highlighted? Who do you want to ask to be in your wedding party? What do you want to spend on your big day? Although this month can feel overwhelming at times, once the logistics have been settled and decided on, the rest of the planning tends to naturally fall into place.

Ten months before your big day also has some pretty fun milestones too! This is the time to say yes to the perfect dress, announce your engagement, and research honeymoon locations!


9 Months Prior

So, you’ve made it to the second month in the planning process. There are only nine more to go! This month is one of our personal favorites because it is all about food! Although it is also important to make sure you are sending out your save the date information, and maybe even creating a custom website for your guests where you can share relevant information, this is also when you get to start picking your menu! This month, you can look forward to tasting some delicious samples from potential catering companies!

8 Months Prior

Floral meetings, rental lists, and travel arrangements are some of the things you can expect to decide on 8 months before getting married. These details are sure to let your creative mind take flight as you see how your vendors can help make your dreams come true. This is also the month where you’ll work with your wedding planner to create a working timeline for your big day, along with deciding if you and your partner want to have a first look. As you begin to start thinking about your ceremony this month, it is also important to talk with your partner about any traditions or wedding customs you want to include.



7 Months Prior

The smell of wedding cake is in the air for this month as you and your partner decide on the show-stopping dessert for your big day. Schedule tastings with all of your potential bakers to sample potential flavor options for your cake and determine how creative you want to get with your dessert.


This month, you’ll decide on the DJ or band to get the party started at your reception as well! Speaking of reception, you can also look forward to finalizing any lighting, draping, and linen rentals still needed for the wedding. It isn’t all planning this month though, you and your partner can get excited about finalizing your registry too! This step helps your guests know how to best help you celebrate your new marriage!

6 Months Prior

Make sure you notify your boss that you’ll be needing time off, because your wedding is just 6 months away! For the brides out there, this is the month to finalize your bridal look! You’ll decide on your shoes, accessories (including picking out your gorgeous wedding rings), and schedule your gown fitting. This is also the time to help your bridesmaids find the perfect dresses to wear as they stand by your side!



6 months out, you’ll also want to talk all things rehearsal dinner. This includes finalizing a guest list, booking the location, and deciding on the dinner you will serve your guests.

5 Months Prior to Wedding Day

Give yourself a pat on the back, you’re half way through the planning process! This month you’ll decide if you want any additional decor at your ceremony or reception. Think framed photos of loved ones, a guest book, or favors for your guests.

Planning on exiting your reception in style? Now is the time to book your dream getaway car!


4 Months Prior

With four months to go, the moment has arrived for all the grooms out there to decide on their wedding look! As you finalize the perfect outfit for the event, you’ll also want to get your groomsmen together to pick and order their outfits as well. Don’t forget to also schedule fittings for both the groom and groomsmen sometime this month.

You’ll also want to decide who will officiate your wedding, along with the content that will fill your ceremony four months before your big day. Similarly, now is the time to begin looking into marriage license requirements.


3 Months Prior

The time is final here to address, stamp and seal those beautiful invitations for your guests! On a similar note, this is the month when you want to talk about any signage you and your partner may want at the wedding. This could include a welcome sign, a seating chart, bar signs, and more depending completely on what you and your partner want.


2 Months Prior

In just two months the day will be here! This month you’ll decide on some key details regarding your wedding. You’ll write your vows, you’ll pick your first dance and cake cutting songs, and you’ll ask individuals to give toasts. This is also the time to put those invitations in the mail box!

1 Month Prior

With one month between you and “I do,” this is the time to check over all your outstanding to-do’s and get serious about crossing them off. Make sure you have your marriage license ready to go, change of address forms submitted (if applicable), and that you have sent that photo shoot list to your photographers.

3 Weeks Prior to Wedding Day

Three weeks out from your wedding day is the time to finalize your guest count, decide on a seating arrangement, and to finish writing those vows. This week is also the time for brides to get their hair cut and colored (if desired) and to break in those wedding shoes.

2 Weeks Prior to Wedding Day

It’s time for the groom’s haircut! Two weeks prior to your wedding day, make sure to attend your final fittings, select people to take any personal decor home after your reception, and confirm hotel reservations!

1 Week Prior to Wedding Day

Just seven more days until you marry the love of your life! Start packing all of those wedding day and honeymoon items, getting those favors together, and delegating any last minute tasks because the wedding is almost here!


1 Day Before “I do”

This is it! Tomorrow is your big day! Take this day to pamper yourself with a manicure and pedicure, exchange gifts with your soon to be spouse, and attend your stunning rehearsal dinner. Oh, and get to bed early! You have a big day ahead of you tomorrow!


After “I do”

So you’ve just had the wedding of your dreams, followed by a romantic honeymoon and you are ready to begin your new lives as newly weds! Well, before you crumple up that wedding to-do list, make sure to check off a few more things. Brides, make sure you get your dress professionally cleaned and preserved after the wedding to ensure that it stays beautiful forever! As a couple, you’ll also want to send out thank you cards and write reviews for the vendors that made your wedding day dreams come true after the event.
